Two Major GMDA Road Projects Approved to Strengthen Connectivity and Urban Mobility
Missing link between Sectors 68/69 and comprehensive upgradation of IFFCO Chowk–SPR corridor to improve road, pedestrian, cycling and drainage infrastructure
Gurugram, August 18: In a major boost to Gurugram’s road infrastructure and connectivity, two important projects of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have been accorded approval by the High Powered Works Purchase Committee (HPWPC) meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh.
Stating this today, GMDA Chief Executive Officer Sh. P.C. Meena said that the two projects, including missing link between sectors 68/69 and upgradation of Road corridor from IFFCO Chowk to SPR, have been approved by the HPWPC. Both these projects would strengthen key road corridors and also create integrated infrastructure for vehicular traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.
Sh Meena said that the GMDA is focusing on comprehensive corridor development, where road strengthening is being taken up along with service roads, footpaths, cycle tracks, drainage and junction improvements. This approach will enhance connectivity as well as the overall mobility experience for citizens.
Missing link on Sector Dividing Road 68/69 to connect SPR with Sohna Road
Sharing details of the first project, Sh. P.C. Meena said that the work involves construction of the missing link and service road along the sector-dividing road between Sectors 68 and 69. The development will establish an improved connectivity link between the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and Sohna Road and strengthen accessibility to Sectors 68, 69, 70, 70A, 75 and 76.
The project entails construction of around 900 metres of new main carriageway and overlaying of approximately 1,100 metres of the existing carriageway. Nearly 2 km of new two-lane service road will also be constructed. Footpaths and cycle tracks will be developed along the corridor, along with horticulture works. The project will be executed at an estimated cost of Rs 26.83 crore with a completion period of one year.
Sh. Meena said that the missing-link development would provide an additional route for commuters and improve accessibility to the rapidly developing residential and commercial sectors in the area.
He said that the project has been planned to ensure that enhanced road connectivity is complemented by dedicated infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. This will facilitate smoother vehicular movement while providing safer and more convenient options for non-motorised mobility.
IFFCO Chowk–SPR corridor to undergo comprehensive upgradation
The second project, which was approved by HPWPC, envisages special repair and comprehensive upgradation of the corridor from IFFCO Chowk to SPR, covering the sector-dividing roads between Sectors 28/29, 43/44, 52/52A and 56/57.
According to Sh. Meena, under the project, approximately 7.1 km of the main carriageway will be overlaid with bituminous material. Footpaths and cycle tracks will also be developed on both sides of the corridor to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project will also include construction of stormwater drainage infrastructure along the corridor to facilitate improved drainage and efficient management of rainwater. In addition, junctions will be upgraded and grills and other safety interventions will be installed to improve pedestrian movement and overall road safety. The work is estimated to cost Rs 41.86 crore and is targeted for completion within one year.
Sh Meena said that the road infrastructure has to cater to all categories of users. Along with improving the carriageway, this project provides for pedestrian and cycling facilities, junction improvements and drainage infrastructure. These interventions will make the corridor more functional, safer and better equipped to meet the mobility needs of the surrounding sectors.
He further said that GMDA was taking up road infrastructure projects with a focus on improving connectivity while simultaneously creating infrastructure that is safer, more accessible and responsive to the needs of different categories of road users.
The two projects, he added, would further strengthen Gurugram’s road network and enhance mobility across key residential and commercial areas. The integrated approach would also help improve the overall functionality and safety of important corridors connecting various parts of the city.
